An imperative is essentially a ought; something I ought to do. Hypothetical imperatives are the oughts that direct my actions provided I have certain goals or interests. One such idea is the Categorical Imperative (CI). First mentioned in the Groundwork of the Metaphysics of Morals, the CI is a moral law which states morality is derived from rationality, and all moral judgments are rationally supported. What is right is right, and what is wrong is wrong. With further explanations, Kant postulated what he called ‘categorical imperatives’.

Kant claims that the Categorical Imperative, which is the Moral Law, is implicitly known to every fully formed human being. And yet its formulation is absolutely original with him. Kant described two types of common commands given by reason: the hypothetical imperative, which dictates a given course of action to reach a specific end; and the categorical imperative, which dictates a course of action that must be followed because of its rightness and necessity. ~Immanuel Kant, Grounding for the Metaphysics of Morals The hypothetical imperative commands an action in order to produce something else or for some other purpose and the purpose may be actual or possible.
